YOUR RECOMMENDED STARTING OPTIONS

New to Tennis? Start Here.

Your player is new to tennis and at a great age to begin. HTA offers two starting options depending on whether you'd like to try tennis first or begin regular lessons.

TRY TENNIS FIRST

30-Minute Intro Class

A short, fun, low-pressure introduction for younger players who aren't sure yet if tennis is for them.

Why This Class?

The 30-Minute Intro Class is designed as a first experience with tennis. The shorter format gives younger players an opportunity to try the sport before committing to a longer class. Players use Red Balls and a Red Ball court, making tennis easier, more approachable, and most importantly, fun. The goal is to create a positive first experience and help children begin developing a love for the game.

What Will We Work On?

Players are introduced to basic movement, hand-eye coordination, simple racket skills, hitting the ball, and tennis-based games and activities. At this stage, the priority is having fun, becoming comfortable on the court, building confidence, and discovering whether tennis is a sport they enjoy.

READY FOR REGULAR LESSONS

Red Ball

A regular developmental class for younger players ready to begin learning tennis consistently.

Why This Class?

Red Ball makes tennis fun, approachable, and rewarding for younger players. The smaller court and lower-compression ball make it easier to rally, move, and learn proper fundamentals while keeping players active and engaged. Above all, we want young players to have fun, build confidence, and develop a genuine love for tennis.

What Will We Work On?

Players are introduced to forehands, backhands, serving, movement, hand-eye coordination, rallying, scoring, and introductory point play through age-appropriate instruction, games, and activities. Having fun and building confidence are just as important as developing tennis skills.

YOUR RECOMMENDED HTA CLASS

Orange Ball

Orange Ball builds on the fundamentals while giving developing players more space to rally, move, serve, and play points.

Why This Class?

Orange Ball is the next step in developing a complete junior player. The Orange Ball and appropriately sized court allow players to build stronger technique, improve consistency, and sustain longer rallies while gradually introducing more movement, serving, point play, and tactical awareness.

What Will We Work On?

Players work on forehand and backhand development, rally consistency, movement and recovery, serving and returning, volleys, scoring, point construction, and match play. Players also begin learning how to use their developing skills more independently during rallies and points.

Placement Note: Age is a starting point, not an absolute placement decision. HTA coaches may adjust placement based on experience, ability, and overall development.

YOUR RECOMMENDED HTA CLASS

Green / Yellow Ball

Green and Yellow Ball classes develop the skills players need for full-court tennis and increasingly independent point play.

Why This Class?

Players 11+ can vary significantly in experience and ability, so age alone is not enough to determine Green or Yellow Ball placement. These classes help players transition into full-court tennis while continuing to develop the technical, movement, tactical, and competitive skills needed to rally and play points independently.

What Will We Work On?

Players work on full-court forehand and backhand development, rally consistency, movement and court positioning, serving and returning, volleys, point construction, tactical decision-making, scoring, and match play. Training increasingly emphasizes using these skills together during live points.

Placement Note: This recommendation does not automatically determine Green versus Yellow Ball. HTA coaches may place players based on their experience, ability, rally skills, and overall development.

POTENTIAL FIT

Junior Performance

Evaluation Required

Based on your training goal, your player may be a potential fit for HTA's Junior Performance Group.

Why This Class?

Junior Performance is designed for committed players looking for a more demanding training environment than the standard developmental program. The group is intended for players with an established tennis foundation who want higher-intensity training and continued development toward competitive match, high school, and tournament play.

What Will We Work On?

Training goes deeper into technical refinement, rally tolerance, movement and footwork, serve and return, point construction, tactical patterns, competitive decision-making, physical development, and match play. Players are expected to train with greater intensity, purpose, and consistency.

Potential Fit — Evaluation Required: Selecting Performance Training does not automatically guarantee placement. Junior Performance is a select group and participation requires HTA coach evaluation and approval.

YOUR RECOMMENDED HTA CLASS

Adult Beginner

A slower-paced instructional class designed to teach the game from the ground up.

Why This Class?

Adult Beginner is designed to build the technical foundation needed to play tennis confidently. The class intentionally moves at a slower pace so coaches have time to break down each skill, explain the details, provide instruction, and help players understand proper technique before progressing into faster-paced drilling and point play.

What Will We Work On?

Players learn the game from the ground up, including grips, forehands, backhands, serving, returning, movement, court positioning, rallying, scoring, and how to play points. The emphasis is on understanding and learning proper fundamentals and technique rather than simply keeping the ball moving.

YOUR RECOMMENDED HTA CLASS

Adult Drill & Play

Not For Beginners

An active, social tennis session for players who already know the fundamentals and want to hit and play.

Why This Class?

Drill & Play is designed for players who already understand the basic strokes and want opportunities to hit, move, rally, play live points, and enjoy tennis with other players. This is not a beginner instructional class and is not designed around significant technical coaching or stroke development.

What Should I Expect?

Expect active hitting, rally-based activities, live-ball situations, point play, friendly competition, and plenty of interaction with other players. The focus is on playing tennis, getting reps, meeting and playing with others, and having a fun, energetic session. Coaches will organize and facilitate the session, but significant technical instruction and detailed stroke breakdown are not the focus.

Not For Beginners: Players should already understand the basic strokes and be able to rally, serve, and participate in point play.

Longer, higher-intensity training for experienced players seeking focused development.

Why This Class?

These longer, higher-intensity sessions are for players who want to actively improve their technique, consistency, movement, tactics, serve and return, and overall competitive game.

What Will We Work On?

Training may include technical refinement, higher-intensity rally work, movement and footwork, consistency under pressure, serve and return development, attacking and defensive patterns, point construction, tactical decision-making, and competitive point play.

Approval Required: This group is intended for experienced players. Final placement is subject to HTA approval and group availability.
